Montecristo is probably the best known Habanos brand, perhaps even the most famous handmade cigar of all. It is certainly the benchmark against which all other cigars are measured and provides an excellent reference point for comparing both size and flavour. The brand was created in 1935 by Alonso Menendez, after he bought the "Particulares" cigar factory and brand, and renamed it to Montecristo. The name of the brand came from the Dumas novel "The Count of Montecristo", a novel which was read to the cigar rollers in the factory while they were working.
Today, Montecristo accounts for more than 50% of the Cuban handmade cigars sold worldwide. The brand is famous for their medium to full flavoured cigars, which are rich and have flavours of Tobacco and wood. While Montecristo has a line for every type of smoker, the No4 (Petit Corona) and No2 (Piramide) are flagship vitolas the world over.
