The H. Upmann brand was created in the 1840 by two German brothers, August and Herman Upmann. The two bankers user the cigar company to satisfy their avid passion for cigars, as well as a promotional tool for their customers. Both of their businesses however were not successfull, and so the brand was sold to a British firm J.Frankau & Co in 1922. But the true reborn of the brand came in around 1935, when Menéndez, García, y Cía bought the company. Menendez and Garcia kept the growth of the company until after the Cuban revolution. In the recent years, H. Upmann has gained the status of "Global Brand" in the Habanos Portofolio.
The H. Upmann range is another brand which is completed by the presence of a factory named after it. Despite its light to medium flavours, it has the ability to age well, and in many cases the flavours strengthen as the cigar gets older. Their smaller vitolas are amongst the favourite daytime cigars of many afficionados, while their larger vitolas are some of the most praised and sought after cigars in the world.
